Opera (Lhamo)
The preservation of Traditional Tibetan Opera, also known as Lhamo, is a principal focus of TIPA. One of the highlights of the year is, without doubt, the annual Shoton Opera Festival, a 9-day long celebration of Lhamo. Each Lhamo performance is an event in itself, lasting up to 6 hours.

Dance
The dances of Tibet vary in style from region to region. In the Lhasa region, for example, a quick-stepping rhythmic style is preferred. However, in the Kham region of eastern Tibet more elaborate movements are practised. TIPA dance troupes perform dance programs incorporating all styles.

Music
Traditional Tibetan instruments such as the dranyen, flute and piwang are taught and played here in TIPA. There is also a contemporary aspect to music in TIPA with the establishment in 1994 of a new band, Aakama, which composes it's own modern Tibetan music.

Research
The research section is responsible for documenting and archiving the literature, picture, audio as well as visual components of Tibetan Operatic culture, dance and music. They are also responsible for researching materials that are related with performing tradition.

Craft

Our handicraft section provides the necessary costumes and props needed during the performance. Beside the costumes of various regions of three provinces, they produce costumes for Tibetan opera, which includes animal's costume (with their mask), hats, wigs, musical instruments and canopies. They also undertake orders from external agency, interested in buying authentic Tibetan traditional dress, costumes, boots and musical instrument.
